Weretigers (Harimau Jadian): Myth or Reality?
Weretigers are a kind of knowledge that is said to allow a person to change their appearance and body into a tiger when desired. It is believed to be aided by the jinn or demons, who are kept for the purpose of helping their master defend themselves and also to harm their enemies. Weretigers usually need to be discarded before dying, and if not discarded, the student of this knowledge will have difficulty dying.
This knowledge is said to originate from Sumatra, especially from the Malay, Minangkabau and Rejang tribes. The kings in ancient times in Sumatra had a lot of tiger knowledge inherited from generation to generation. In West Java, the Sunda tribe also believed that Prabu Siliwangi was also the owner of the tiger spirit knowledge. This knowledge was then brought by immigrants from Sumatra to the Malay Peninsula, especially to Negeri Sembilan which practiced the Adat Perpatih.
One of the famous figures with weretiger knowledge was Tok Paroi, a leader of the trading community who came from Minangkabau. He and his comrades were among the earliest Malay groups from Minangkabau who opened settlements in Sungai Ujong (Seremban) and Johol during the Malacca Malay Sultanate era. He was said to be able to transform into a weretiger and also grow taller than the tallest meranti tree in the Gunung Angsi forest.
The story of Tok Paroi has become a legend and passed down by the elders to scare their children who go out at night or return late in the evening. In fact, there are also stories that Tok Paroi besides being able to transform into a tiger, he was also able to grow taller than the tallest meranti tree in the Gunung Angsi forest.
But, did these stories really happen or just myths created by the imagination of people in the past? Does weretiger knowledge still exist in modern times? Is there any scientific or logical evidence that can explain this phenomenon?
There are several opinions that can be put forward to answer these questions. First, some argue that weretiger knowledge is a kind of black magic or deviant knowledge that contradicts Islamic teachings. It is an act of shirk that involves the use of jinn or demons to change the shape of one's body. It also violates the laws of nature and logic because it is impossible for someone to change into another animal easily.
Second, some argue that weretiger knowledge is a kind of subtle or metaphysical knowledge that involves the use of one's inner energy or aura to create optical or hypnotic effects on others. It does not change the shape of the body physically, but only deceives the eyes or minds of others to see someone as a tiger. It also involves the use of certain spells or prayers to call spirits or supernatural beings related to tigers.
Third, some argue that weretiger knowledge is a kind of inherited or genetic knowledge that involves the use of one's DNA or cells to activate tiger characteristics that are hidden within oneself. It does not change the shape of the body completely, but only changes certain features such as eyes, teeth, nails, fur or voice. It also involves the use of certain materials such as bones, teeth, blood or tiger meat to stimulate or increase these tiger features.
Fourth, some argue that weretiger knowledge is a kind of imaginary or fantasy knowledge that involves the use of one's imagination or creativity to create stories or tales that are interesting or scary about tigers. It does not change the shape of the body at all, but only makes up or imitates the style or behavior of tigers. It also involves the use of symbols or metaphors to represent traits or personalities related to tigers.
Of these four opinions, which one is most convincing or reasonable for you? Do you believe or not believe in the existence of weretiger knowledge? Have you ever seen or heard about people who have this knowledge? Are you interested in knowing more about this knowledge?
