Sulur Bidar: The Ghost Mat that Shocks Malaysia

Sulur bidar is the name given to a mysterious creature that is said to inhabit the rivers and lakes of Malaysia. This creature is described as a white mat that moves on the water, has four heads at each corner, and can roll and pull prey into the water. Sulur bidar is often associated with scary and mystical stories, especially among fishermen and old people.


Although there is no scientific evidence to confirm the existence of sulur bidar, there are many stories and testimonies that spread on social media and the internet about the sightings of this creature. One of the videos that went viral recently showed a woman who was riding a kayak on a river, suddenly attacked by something that was suspected to be sulur bidar. The video showed something that was white and shaped like a mat circling the kayak, while spraying water into the air. The woman looked scared and screamed for help.


According to the sources available, sulur bidar usually appears during the rainy season, and only lucky or unlucky people can see it. Sulur bidar is said to be found around lakes and large rivers throughout Malaysia, such as Tasik Kenyir, Tasik Banding Royal Belum, Tasik Chini and Sungai Pahang. Another name for sulur bidar is also known as Hantu Balung Bidai.


Sulur bidar is believed to be a supernatural creature in Malay belief. It may consist of jinn or demons who like to disturb humans. It is also said to be an evil spirit that lives in water. It resembles a rattan mat that floats and will roll and soften its prey. Prey that is rolled by sulur bidar will disappear without a trace, or be found dead from drowning a few days later.


How to avoid sulur bidar? According to the old people, if you see signs of sulur bidar's presence such as bubbles or whirlpools that appear suddenly, along with dry leaves that emerge from the bottom of the river or lake, then it is best to stop fishing or swimming there. If you have to cross the area, then it is advisable to recite the call to prayer loudly to repel the creature. Never challenge or try to catch sulur bidar, because it will bring disaster.


Sulur bidar is one of the mysteries that never unraveled in Malaysia. Although there are many stories and videos about this creature, there is still no solid evidence that can prove the truth or rational explanation about this phenomenon. Does sulur bidar really exist, or is it just a fabrication? Is it a physical or metaphysical creature? Is it dangerous or not? These answers are still a big question mark for us all.
