The Night of the Jack-o'-Lanterns

It was Halloween night, and I was looking forward to a fun evening of trick-or-treating with my friends. We had planned to visit the most decorated houses in our neighborhood, hoping to get the best candy and maybe a few scares. We dressed up in our costumes, grabbed our bags, and headed out.

The first few houses were normal. We got some chocolate bars, some gummy worms, some lollipops. Nothing too exciting, but nothing too disappointing either. We thanked the homeowners and moved on.

Then we came across a house that looked different from the others. It was dark and silent, with no lights or music. The only thing that stood out was the front yard, which was filled with dozens of jack-o'-lanterns. They were carved in various shapes and sizes, some smiling, some frowning, some grimacing. They all had candles inside them, casting an eerie glow on the lawn.

We were curious about this house. Why did they have so many pumpkins? Did they have any candy? Were they trying to scare us? We decided to find out. We walked up to the porch and rang the doorbell.

No one answered.

We rang it again.

Still no answer.

We knocked on the door.

Nothing.

We shrugged and turned to leave. Maybe they were not home, or maybe they did not want to be bothered. Either way, it was a waste of time.

But then we heard a voice.

"Hello, children. Do you like my jack-o'-lanterns?"

We looked around and saw a man standing behind one of the windows. He was old and wrinkled, with gray hair and a long beard. He wore a black robe and a pointed hat. He looked like a wizard or a warlock.

He smiled at us and waved his hand.

"Come closer, children. I have something for you."

We were hesitant, but also intrigued. What did he have for us? Was it candy? Was it a trick? We decided to take a chance and approached the window.

The man opened it and reached out his hand. He held a small box wrapped in orange paper.

"Here you go, children. A special treat for you."

He handed us the box and closed the window.

We looked at the box and wondered what was inside. We shook it gently and heard something rattling.

We tore off the paper and opened the box.

Inside was a severed finger.

We screamed and dropped the box.

The finger fell out and rolled on the ground.

We looked up and saw the man laughing maniacally behind the window.

"Happy Halloween, children! I hope you enjoy my jack-o'-lanterns!"

He pointed his finger at us and chanted some words.

Suddenly, all the jack-o'-lanterns came to life.

They sprouted legs and arms and claws and teeth.

They jumped off the lawn and ran towards us.

They surrounded us and attacked us.

They bit us and scratched us and tore us apart.

They devoured us alive.

And then they went back to their places on the lawn.

They became jack-o'-lanterns again.

But now they had new faces carved on them.

Our faces.
