Mysticism of the Malay World
Mysticism of the Malay world is a term that encompasses various aspects of belief, knowledge, ritual, weaponry, medicine and divination that are related to the unseen and subtle things in Malay culture. Mysticism of the Malay world is not something new, but has existed since the pre-Islamic era, when the Malay society still adhered to animism and the influence of Hindu-Buddhist religions. Mysticism of the Malay world also became the subject of study by some British administrators in Malaya during the colonial era, such as R.O. Windstedt and Wilkinson, who collected and translated ancient Malay books that contained mystical knowledge.
Among the elements of mysticism of the Malay world that can be identified are:
- Seclusion and retreat: This is an activity of isolating oneself in a quiet place, usually not eating and drinking, to obtain knowledge or power from the unseen. Seclusion is usually done by people who want to achieve spiritual perfection or gain authority in society. Retreat is an activity that is more religious, where people who do it aim to get closer to God and ask for His help.
- Amulets and charms: These are objects that are believed to have power to protect their owners from danger or calamity. Amulets usually consist of writings or diagrams that contain sacred verses, names of God, prayers or spells. Charms are usually natural objects such as stones, wood, animal skins or plants that are believed to have certain properties.
- Magic and curses: These are knowledge that are used to influence or control others by unseen means. Magic usually involves the use of materials such as candles, needles, hair, blood or bones. Curses are utterances that contain oaths or curses against someone or something.
- Ancient medicine: These are methods of treating diseases or wounds using natural or unseen materials. Ancient medicine also involves the use of curses, prayers, spells or amulets to heal patients.
- Weaponry: These are weapons that are believed to have unseen or special power. Mystical weaponry of the Malay world include daggers, spears, swords, javelins and arrows. These weapons are usually filled with mystical knowledge or given specific names to enhance their effectiveness.
- Unseen things: These are subtle beings or phenomena that are believed to exist in the Malay world. Unseen things include spirits, ghosts, jinn, fairies, elves, dragons, weretigers and so on.
- Astrology and divination: These are knowledge that are used to know things that have not happened or secrets by using stars, moon, sun, wind, water, fire, earth or other objects as clues.
Mysticism of the Malay world is part of the cultural heritage of the Malay people that should be known and understood as a phase in their history. However, mysticism of the Malay world does not mean inviting the Malays to turn away from the pure and perfect teachings of Islam. On the contrary, mysticism of the Malay world should be examined critically and rationally, and adapted to the pure and straight Islamic law.
