The Sea Princesses and the Fisherman: A Horror Story Based on Ulek Mayang

Ulek mayang is a traditional dance that originated from Terengganu, Malaysia. The dance tells the story of seven sea princesses who came to the land to play. One of them fell in love with a fisherman and tried to snatch him from his wife. The story also has a song with lyrics like this:

Puteri dua berbaju serongPuteri dua bersanggol sendengPuteri dua bersubang gadingPuteri dua berselendang kuningUmbok umbok dengan jala jemala (mayang diumbok)Nak ulek mayang diulek

However, what many people do not know is that this story actually contains elements of horror and mysticism. According to some sources, the sea princesses are not good creatures, but rather evil spirits who like to disturb humans. They also have magical powers that can cause disaster to anyone who opposes them.

In the original story, the fisherman who was loved by the sea princess was named Awang. He was attacked by the sea princess while fishing in the sea. The sea princess tried to pull him into the water, but he managed to escape and return to his home. However, he fell ill and unconscious.

His wife, Mak Yang, was worried and asked for help from a shaman to heal her husband. The shaman found out that Awang had been bewitched by the sea princess and needed to be freed from her influence. The shaman then performed a ceremony to drive away the sea princess.

The ceremony involved the ulek mayang dance, where seven women danced while holding mayang leaves (a kind of coconut leaf). The dance was intended to imitate the movements of the sea princesses and attract their attention. Then, the shaman would recite a spell to expel them.

However, the ceremony did not go smoothly. The sea princesses were unhappy with the shaman's efforts and appeared to challenge him. They also brought strong winds and big waves to disrupt the ceremony. The shaman had to fight with the sea princesses using his black magic.

Finally, the shaman managed to defeat the sea princesses and forced them to leave Awang. Awang recovered from his illness and thanked the shaman. However, the sea princess who loved Awang was not willing to let him go and swore to come back again.

This story shows that ulek mayang is not just a dance for entertainment, but also has a dark and frightening background. The sea princesses who look beautiful and charming are actually creatures that are evil and fierce. They will not hesitate to kill or hurt anyone who disturbs them or steals their love.
